On this fabulous day marked for acknowledging and celebrating women all over the world, we share the spotlight with a small Artisan venture that has been incredibly supportive and instrumental in the way Hibiscus Three facilitates social impact throughout Papua New Guinea through our small publishing service and merchandise enterprise.
In collaboration with kalapua, the Hibiscus Three Shop has been stocked with hand made gorgeous, Essentials items all created using stunning botanical and PNG-inspired prints.
This includes our newly released Hibiscus Three #IWD2022 Essentials Case made by kalapua.

5 Questions with kalapua
for the love of bananas, colour and creativity.
In rolling out our merchandise range, Hibiscus Three was thrilled to have an opportunity to collaborate with kalapua .
Parallel to our mission to promote published writing by Papua New Guineans, Hibiscus Three's operation as a social enterprise actively seeks out partnerships with Papua New Guinean Creatives (especially women ) to showcase their high quality products, complementing our publications.
Launched on 8 November, the Hibiscus Three x kalapua Essentials Case was incredibly popular, selling out within one month via our online Shop. The industrial black, pink and grey zipper variations were all favourites for our friends.
We recently caught up with the super-talented Creative behind kalapua to ask her 5 Questions:
1. HT: Describe kalapua in 5 words:
k: Light, fun, colourful, love and home.
2. HT: For our Essentials Case collaboration, we were really impressed that you create and printed our logo by hand. Can you briefly describe your process to us?
k: I used a lino block and hand carved the Hibiscus Three logo. The logo was then hand printed onto cotton duck fabric before it was assembled into an Essentials pouch.
3. HT: Can you share some of the values/philosophies and inspiration that you bring to your creative process?
k: The most important thing for me is that I have fun. For me, there is something really therapeutic when it comes to creating. I make pieces that I love. You will notice that many of the prints I have used are simliar; eg tropical or botanical prints. These prints remind me of my parents (who were both Creatives in their own fields).
4. HT: What are you working on at the moment, and what can we expect to see from kalapua in 2021?
k: I'm always looking for fresh new prints - I'm a bit of a fabric hoard to be honest BUT creating kalapua pieces brings me joy. Expect to see more new and old favourite prints in 2021 as I will have more time in my creative space.

k: I am based out of my home in Kokopo, but you may find kalapua on Instagram
